What is the best video game controller for Minecraft? Well that depends on what system you are playing the game on. I would suggest the standard controller that comes with the system. Since Minecraft is not a FPS (first person shooter) game or a third person shooter, like Call of Duty, you would not need a controller with rapid fire. Minecraft is also not a racing game so you do not need mappable buttons for drifting like Need for Speed. You won't need an arcade stick for combos since it is not a fighting game like Tekken and Street Fighter. If you are a parent, grandparent, etc. reading this for gift ideas and you are unsure what controller would be best for the game, Minecraft, it would be tremendously beneficial for you to know what Minecraft actually is.
What is Minecraft exactly?
If you haven't heard of Minecraft, then it is surprising due to the number of people, websites, etc. talking about how Minecraft beat Fortnite in popularity. Minecraft has been out way longer, I'm talking years longer, than Fortnite. Minecraft is a sandbox video game that is sold on many platforms. You make the world how you want it to be. If you think that the world pictured above came with those buildings then you are sadly mistaken. I built them. Me, myself and I. You can have friends in your world to help you build but you can play single player if preferred.
In survival mode, you have to build tools to harvest blocks, build a shelter to protect yourself from mobs or attack them for items and trade with villagers to get things you need or want to build the world of your dreams. In creative mode, everything is at your fingertips. You have unlimited amounts of each block to use in your creations, whether it be a simple building to a solar powered base.
The controls are simple. You attack mobs by either selecting a sword and use the attack button to hit it or select a bow , if you have the arrows, and press the same button to draw an arrow and let go. Select the pickaxe and use the attack button to mine. That easy. You do not go through 5 menus to find the sword or pickaxe. No button smashing and no combos. Steve, the original Minecraft playable character, does not know Kung-Fu! The controls and interface are so simple that this game originally used the keyboard and the mouse since the first edition was the Java edition. Now you know the gameplay of Minecraft, let's explore the controller options.
Xbox One Edition
For either the Xbox One edition or the Xbox One Bedrock version (better together update) the controller to use is the standard Xbox One Wireless Controller. To read the review, click on the link. This controller has the basic buttons that the game needs. If you tried using an arcade stick, you will quickly realize that you cannot change the direction of the camera without the second analog stick. If you use the elite controller, you will find that there are too many buttons and if you are clumsy like me than they will get in the way. I accidentally dropped important items. Imagine just dropping diamonds into the lava!
PC
For the java edition, you best bet would be the standard keyboard and mouse. For Windows 10 you need the standard Xbox One Wireless Controller. If you want the Xbox One controller to be wireless you need a wireless adapter. If you are okay with it wired, you can use a micro to USB cable like I do.
So both are on PC so why the difference? In the Java edition, the crafting interface is different than the other versions. You have to place the items on the crafting interface and make a correct recipe to get the desired crafted item you want. Many Java users prefer the keyboard and mouse. In the Windows 10 edition you have the console crafting interface meaning you do not need to memorize the recipes and just click on the item you want as long as you have the materials. However if you rather craft with recipes, you still can.
PS4
Same as the xbox one, the standard controller, PS4 Dualshock controller is the one you want to go with. It has all the buttons you need and no extra buttons to hinder you like on the customizable ones. It has two analog sticks, unlike the arcade sticks, needed for player movement and camera movement. Basic is the way to go.
Nintendo Switch
If you planning on playing this portable use the standard dual Joy-Cons. That's the only way to play portable. It does not support a single Joy-Con. If you are playing this on your home screen then I would recommend the Switch Pro controller. If you are playing multiplayer split screen then 1 person needs the dual Joy-Cons and the other players the Switch Pro Controller.
This covered most of the newer editions so I hope this help to answer, What's the best video game controller for Minecraft.
